Title: CoEuS & Rhea: Titans in the service of social activity streams

Abstract: A multitude of contemporary applications heavily involve graph data whose size appears to be ever-increasing. This trend shows no signs of subsiding and has led to systems that routinely handle voluminous data modeled as graphs. In this presentation, we will discuss two recent efforts regarding streams of social activity: i) a community detection algorithm that handles graph streams and expands seed-sets to communities using space sublinear to the number of edges of the graph, and ii) an adaptive sampling algorithm, that forms a network of authoritative users while processing a stream of social activity, to sample the content of users that are more likely to provide information of high quality.

This is joint work with Alexandros Ntoulas and Alex Delis.

Speaker Bio: Panagiotis Liakos is a Ph.D. student at the University of Athens where he received both his BSc. (2008) and MSc. (2011) in Computer Science. His research interests lie in the areas of community detection, graph compression, social activity stream sampling and opinion formation. In addition, Panagiotis works as a software engineer and is the maintainer of the official Apache Giraph Juju charm.
