Joint BU CS colloquium and RISCS Center talk

3 pm Wednesday, May 5, at 111 Cummington St MCS 135

Title: Cloudy, Without a Chance of Data Loss
Speaker: Kevin Bowers, RSA Labs

Abstract: Cloud storage promises to provide consumers with cheap storage
that can be accessed at any time, from anywhere. The appeal of such a system
is easy to understand, as too is the fear people have of outsourcing the
storage of valuable data. Recent failures and loss of data by cloud storage
providers has done little to ease these fears. Fear is often a product of
the unknown. In this talk we present several newly developed techniques that
give the consumer better insight into the cloud, as well as ways to leverage
this insight to ensure fault tolerance. Given the right tools, the benefits
of cloud storage can be achieved, without a chance of data loss.

Bio: Kevin Bowers is a researcher with RSA Labs, based in Cambridge, MA. His
work focuses mainly on cryptographic protocols and usable security, with a
specific interest in cloud security. Together with his colleagues at RSA
Labs, Kevin has published several papers on topics in cloud security and he
continues to work on several open problems in the area. Before joining RSA
Labs, Kevin did graduate work at Carnegie Mellon University after earning
bachelor's degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
