Title: Information Centric Networking: Is the Gain worth the Pain?

Information-Centric Networking (ICN) has emerged as a departure from the
traditional host-centric communication models of the TCP/IP architecture.
In ICN, content can be accessed more quickly and securely, regardless of
its physical location. In this talk, I will first review basic ICN
architectural proposals [2]. Later I will discuss a recent trace-driven
simulation study on the benefits and costs of representative models [1].
Somewhat surprisingly, [1] shows that most of the performance benefits
(e.g., lower response latency, congestion and server load) can be achieved
with a simpler architecture for ICN that caches content only at the edges
of the network. Pervasive Cashing and Nearest-replica Routing in ICN
architectures adds significant complexity to the network and are not
fundamentally necessary. Building on these insights, [1] also presents a
proof-of-concept design of an incrementally deployable ICN architecture.
