Title: NRG Meeting: Catch me if you can: Botnets as fast flux services
Title: Catch me if you can: Botnets as fast flux services
Abstract: Since the late 90s when the first botnets emerged we have seen
botnets evolve into sophisticated services capable of evading detection and
resilient to takedowns. Botnets as a service has proved to be a profitable
business model responsible for over 110 billion dollars in global loses.
Established botnets are available for rent allowing a variety of campaigns
to be executed. During operation it is of utmost importance for the bots to
remain in contact with the command and control server while also remaining
hidden to the world. Fast fluxing is a technique used to conceal the
identity of a server. Botnets provide the perfect infrastructure for a
fast flux network as the bots are treated as disposable proxies protecting
the identity of the valued server. This talk will survey the various
fluxing mechanisms used by todays advanced botnets including domain fluxing
and single, double, N IP fluxing. In addition we will explore how these
techniques are used to create a botnet as a fast flux service.
