Expressive SLAs with Application to Cloud Resource Management
Service Level Agreements (SLAs) are negotiated contracts between providers and consumers of a service or an infrastructure that are managed using resource management frameworks. Typically, SLAs that govern the use of infrastructures specify that fixed fractions of resource capacities be allocated for unencumbered use by a consumer. To enable efficient utilization of provider resources, various resource management frameworks have been proposed, each tailored to the needs of a specific application domain (e.g., real-time systems or content delivery networks) by expressing the resource requirements necessary to satisfy desirable QoS constraints. Typically, under these frameworks, SLAs serve as abstractions of consumer requirements, without necessarily reflecting underlying tradeoffs that consumers may be willing to accept. In this talk, I will discuss representative literature related to classical SLA and resource management frameworks, especially for Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) solutions. In addition, I will present nascent efforts that consider more expressive SLA frameworks (and associated resource management mechanisms) that enable modeling and monetizing consumer flexibility in a cloud setting.
