[Busec] Group meeting tomorrow with Rick Skowyra and 11AM networking meeting with Robert Lychev

All,

1) Group meeting 1PM, in MCS137 with Rick Skowyra.
Rick will talk about work-in-progress on distributed recommendation system
that is robust to adversaries.

2) At 11AM in MCS148 Robert Lychev will talk at the networking group
meeting.
Robert will discuss our work-in-progress on BGP security protocols when
they are "partially deployed", i.e. some nodes in the network use the
protocols, but others do not. Info below.

See you tomorrow,
Sharon

Multi-Armed Bandit Problem and Recommendation Systems
Speaker: Rick Skowyra
1 PM in MCS137

Abstract:
Recommendation systems, of both the centralized and distributed variety,
have traditionally attempted to maximize the total utility afforded to all
users. This social optimum may come at the cost of individual utility,
sensitivity to adversarial actions, or extremely low privacy gaurentees. In
constrast to this approach, we propose a distributed recommendation system
based on the Multi-Armed Bandit problem in machine learning, which attempts
to balance minimization of individual costs with resilience to intelligent
adversaries, while maintaining some notion of privacy. We compare our
approach to existing works in both the centralized and distributed domains,
and argue that this represents a fundamentally new approach to the design
of recommendation systems.

NRG meeting: Are We There Yet? Quantifying BGP Security Under Partial
Deployment
Presenter: Robert Lychev
Time: 11AM in MCS148

Summary: I will discuss our current results with regards to our project on
quantifying partial deployment of the Secure Border Gateway Protocol
(S-BGP). I will mostly focus on the following questions.

1. What does it mean to partially deploy S-BGP?
2. How can partial deployment of S-BGP benefit and/or hurt the Internet?
3. How can one quantify the effectiveness of partial deployment of S-BGP
with respect to securing the Internet?
